Sports Performance

“Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision." So said the late Muhammad Ali, a sportsman who defied the odds multiple times to achieve great things. Ali understood the importance of the right mental approach in sports.

How does it work?

Successful athletes are often able to control their state of mind better than their rivals, giving them a psychological advantage which prevents them from being affected by nerves, or not performing to their potential. Hypnotherapy is unmatched in engaging with an athlete mentally in order to bring about an unbreakable positive mental attitude, leading to the achieving of goals.

Whether you are running or competing in a combat sport: What we can visualise, we can materialise, and being able to harness negative emotions and thoughts is one of the key facets involved with sports psychology. If the human mind is capable of imagining something, it is capable of making it happen. The brain sometimes has a hard time distinguishing between imagining something and doing it in reality, meaning visualisation of success can be crucial to actualising it.

Find your 'zone'

Sports people often refer to being in ‘the zone’. What does this mean? Total absorption in the present – the point where outside distractions are barely noticeable and performance levels are at their highest.

Solution focused clinical hypnotherapy can help in reducing the stress and anxiety of performing and can help in allowing the creative sides of our mind to operate under the pressure of competing – this is when you truly enter ‘the zone’.

Used by the best in the world

Many top sports people have used hypnotherapy for sports performance as a major part of their preparation in helping them win. Among them are Michael Jordan, who many consider to be the best basketball player ever; Olympic champion gymnast Mary Lou Retton; 14 time golf major winner Tiger Woods; former boxing world champion Mike Tyson.

Get mentally confident

Self-confidence is an important issue when it comes to succeeding at any given sport. Our perceptions of ourselves can greatly influence how we perform. Solution focused clinical hypnotherapy can help us bring out our inner swagger, meaning we come to the start line, opening bell or whistle bursting with positive energy and ready to make an impact on the event. It is not necessarily about feeling better than our competitors, it is about feeling at the top of our game.

When we first meet it will be for the initial consultation, I will introduce myself and we will spend some time getting to know each other. We will discuss what you want to achieve. I will note down some general background and medical information.

I will then explain to you how your brain works and how we use trance to help us move forward. These explanations form the foundations for all that we will do as we go forward. You will be introduced to simple tools and techniques that you can start to use straight away to start making really positive steps to achieving your goals. It is amazing how many of my clients find this session enlightening and rewarding.

Subsequent sleep hypnosis sessions will last for 50 minutes. The first half of the session is spent helping you focus on what you want to achieve. This is called brain based theory and involves understanding how the brain works. It is at this stage you will set a goal to work towards between sessions. This therapy relies upon you fully committed to change. I will do my very busy to facilitate change and give you a helping hand but ultimately your success will depend on your commitment. Change can be difficult for reasons I will explain but with commitment progress will be made and quickly. The second part of the session is conducted with you on the couch. I will put you into trance and use a combination of relaxation and positive suggestion to begin creating and modifying the neural pathways in the brain. This helps you to start moving forward in your life. My clients really look forward to going into trance as it is really enjoyable.
